Lee County government: A lesson in contradiction

Scanning our government stories from the past month ….

“I still feel very strongly that when taxpayer dollars are given to benefit one company over another, the government is still picking winners and losers.”
— Linda Shook, Lee County Chairman, on why she feels strongly against granting tax incentives

“We are not in the business of giving away taxpayer money to nonprofits on an annual basis … We’re going to be in the business of picking winners and losers.”
— James Womack, Lee County Commissioner, quote after county passes stricter policy regarding granting funds to nonprofit agencies

  1. Billy; This wasn’t a contradiction. Your “…” in between my comments are evidence of what I would refer to as journalistic technique (some might call it a half-truth). I said both comments, and I stand by both. The second comment was prefaced by my argument against giving away precious tax dollars to non-profits as we have done in the past. I was arguing we had to change our approach because otherwise the Board of Commissioners “will be in the business of picking winners and losers.”

When Billy Ball fist reported this quote I pointed out to him he was cherry picking coments without context. Now his editor is doing the same thing. I think your readers deserve better, more objective reporting than this.
