Let the sunshine in …

This week is sort of a weeklong holiday for journalists: Sunshine Week.
I never appreciated Sunshine Week — a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information — until I was editor for the Daily World in Opelousas, and the mayor at the time went to great lengths to keep our newspaper in the dark on many issues. My last year there seemed to be a constant struggle to find out exactly what was going on with that city’s government, and when it was all said and done, she was slammed in a federal audit for her staff’s bumbling of city finances. The police chief was also charged with misappropriation of funds.
Fun stuff.
Learn more about Sunshine Week at the official government Web site.
We’ll highlight Sunshine Week on our editorial page this week as well.
Here’s to open government.
