Josh Hamilton, Jim McCormick and more …

July 15, 2008

Josh Hamilton
That was an amazing display last night by Texas Rangers outfielder (and North Carolina boy) Josh Hamilton. While he didn’t win the Derby, his 28 homers in Round 1 is all anyone will remember. I’ve posted a very short snippet of the Derby below and you can click here for my post on Hamilton from May 28 … a post that has already garnered me nearly 2,000 posts today (Hamilton seems to be a pretty big story right now).
I don’t know what was more impressive, the multiple 500-foot home runs or the genuine fun this guy seemed to be having in an event “snubbed” by a lot of baseball’s bigger names.
Baseball needs Josh Hamilton right now … he’s the closest thing to a “Natural” that’s come around in along time.

Jim McCormick
Well, the supposed reason for Jim McCormick’s resignation was revealed today after a lawsuit was filed Monday against the former Lee County Superintendent.
Sources close to The Herald informed us back in late June that this what was going to be discussed at the June 30 meeting where McCormick eventually resigned. His abrupt resignation kept the school board from openly discussing this situation, therefore leaving Lee County Schools parents and the community in the dark about McCormick’s reasoning.
I’m all for privacy, and we respected McCormick’s privacy during our reporting of the whole ordeal. But we felt the public had a right to know why their superintendent stepped down so immediately (a few rumors for his departure were much worse than the actual reasoning).
Of course, McCormick is only alleged to have had an affair, and of course, he is innocent until proven guilty (in civil court, if this case continues).

The Rant
Join us at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning on The Rant (90.5 FM, WDCC in Sanford) as our guest is Lee County Emergency Management Director Eric Griffin, who’ll talk to us about hurricane season and severe weather. He’ll also take part in our little ‘Dark Knight’ roundtable discussion.

Tomorrow’s Herald
The breaking superintendent story caused us to push back our interview with new Central Carolina Community College President ‘Bud’ Marchant a day, so look for that in tomorrow’s Herald, as well as coverage of tonight’s Sanford City Council meeting, where there will be a protest held by a group wanting the council to allow back yard chickens.
Fun stuff.

100,000 visits
I was hoping to make a big deal about it this week, expecting to top 100,000 posts today or Wednesday, but an unexpected spike in hits (more than 2,000 on my Josh Hamilton post from May) has sent me over the milestone.
Thanks again to everybody who visits me and takes the time to not only read but comment on what I write. Here’s hoping I write enough to lead to 200,000 in the near future.
