Lee commissioner Smith resigns

‘Conflict with current employer’ reason for decision

SANFORD — Kirk Smith, whose appointment to the Lee County Board of Commissioners over the summer was met with opposition by many, said he is resigning from the seat effective immediately.
Smith submitted a letter of resignation to Commissioner Chairman Bob Brown Sunday, writing, “It is apparent that the duties of County Commissioner as well the upcoming election cycle, would conflict directly with my responsibilities to my current employer.”
Smith also apologized for his brief tenure in the letter.
